Attendance

Attendance and collecting a student during the day

Good attendance at school is an important part to making sure a child or young person can achieve their potential at school. However, we know that there are often occasions where a student is unable to attend school for a variety of reasons.

We always endeavour to maintain the most accurate attendance information on our students as possible. In order to do this, we require parents/whānau to contact the school to inform us if their child will not be attending on any given day.

If you know your son/daughter will be absent from school, we ask you to contact the office absence line 06 376 8344 (press 1), the Parent Portal on our website, or the Skool Loop app; at your earliest convenience to update our attendance records.

Tararua College follows the Ministry of Education guidelines for attendance and use the absence codes supplied by them.

  • If the student has been away for three consecutive days for reasons of illness, a medical certificate must be produced.
  • Absences from school for reasons other than illness or bereavement must be applied for in advance through a letter to the Principal/Tumuaki.
  • Patterns of poor attendance may result in referrals made to agencies such Attendance Services, Oranga Tamariki and Police Youth Aid.

If you are late to College:

  • Report to the College Office and sign in – show your note, if you have one.

If you feel ill at College:

  • Tell your teacher. They will issue you with a note that you take to the Sick Bay in the Front Office.
  • Do NOT contact your caregiver asking to be picked up. The College will contact home for you.

If you have an accident:

  • Let a teacher/staff member know as soon as possible. They will organise first aid.

To ensure the safety of students and that there is no confusion as to who is collecting them from the College:

If you have an appointment during school time:

  • Take your note or appointment card to the Office staff who will sign you out.
  • Before departing, a parent or caregiver may need to be contacted to verify this appointment/reason to leave school, before departing.
  • Year 9 -10 students will wait for collection in the front waiting area by the office.
  • Year 11 – 13 students will still be able to sign out with the appropriate permissions and meet parents/caregivers outside the College.

Variations to this procedure can be made upon specific request by parent or caregiver, prior to the student leaving.

These variations will be on the understanding that the arrangement falls outside our Health & Safety procedures and against the advice of the College.

We appreciate that asking parents to come into the College to collect their children is a change in our procedures which will impact on caregivers and whānau, but we feel that the Health and Safety of our students, supported by our processes is paramount in this area.

We appreciate your support in this matter. If you have any concerns regarding this communication, please contact the Principal/Tumuaki at the College.
